In Mario, I share the true story of my unexpected friendship with an unhoused man named Mario, who is no longer homeless and remains one of my good friends. Over the course of a couple of years, we took long walks through inner-city streets and alleys, meeting people whose stories challenged many of my assumptions. Sitting with Mario, listening to his story, and making his portrait reminded me how much we can have in common, regardless of our circumstances.
