PALIMPSEST
These photographs were made in the Blue Ridge Mountains during my most recent trip. The word, Palimpsest comes from old manuscripts that were scraped and written over, but the original writing still faintly shows through. That is how memory feels to me. It’s recursive. We rewrite memories over time, but the older version, the original experience, is still underneath. The mountain landscapes reminded me of that. Weather, time, and people keep changing the surface, but the past is still there. I’m not photographing mountains as scenery. I’m using them as a way to feel memory which is layered, worn, and still alive beneath the surface.
